Let me tell you something no one warned you about.
Most relationships do not die because of one dramatic betrayal. They do not always end with one explosive argument, one terrible night, or one person deciding they are done.
Sometimes, a relationship dies quietly.
It happens little by little, through conversations that never happen, appreciation that gradually disappears, hurts that are repeatedly dismissed, and words that become harsher.
Thread by thread, the connection loosens.
And because nothing seems dramatic enough to demand attention, both people continue living their lives. Work continues. Children still need attention. Bills still have to be paid. Family responsibilities remain. They still take pictures and attend social events, and from the outside, everything may appear fine.
Yet something inside the relationship is changing.
Laughter happens less often, and conversations start to feel more practical and routine. Love no longer feels as natural, and people stop sharing their feelings. They ask fewer questions, lose curiosity about each other, and slowly stop wanting to understand one another.
Over time, two individuals can coexist physically yet feel emotionally distant.
And perhaps the hardest question becomes:
“When did we become strangers?”
Breakdowns in relationships, whether witnessed or experienced, usually develop slowly.
Relationships crumble from minor issues.
Precisely why this discussion of this issue is necessary.
Because awareness gives us the opportunity to do something before the distance becomes permanent.
Before We Get Into It…
Let me ask you something?
Have you ever experienced relationships that seemed normal, but something inside suggested otherwise?
Though affection remains and is visible to all, the bond’s closeness feels different. People talk, but the warmth in their conversations has faded. They spend time together, yet a growing sense of loneliness emerges.
At times, change happens gradually without a single defining moment.
Instead, distance increases due to repeated occurrences: small disappointments, unresolved problems, ignored efforts, and overlooked talks.
Recurring behaviors over time define relationships.
Let’s look at four of them.
1. Taking Your Partner for Granted
Consider when the relationship first began.
You attentively watched subtle signs: your partner’s exhausted glances, their slight attempts, and the things that brought them joy.
Feeling thankful for what they did happened naturally.
It felt good to express a simple “thank you.” It felt meaningful to say “I miss you,” appreciate an effort, or simply share what someone meant to you.
As time passes, familiarity may cause a decline in attentiveness.
What once felt special can feel ordinary.
The person who prepares dinner each evening might eventually seem to be just doing their usual tasks.
Someone who provides, supports the family, remembers important details, or carries responsibilities may receive brief acknowledgement because those efforts have become expected.
This is where the problem begins.
When effort becomes expected, appreciation often disappears.
And when appreciation disappears for long enough, a person can feel invisible.
This is important in many Nigerian homes, where love is often expressed through responsibility and sacrifice rather than words.
A person may work extremely hard to provide for the family but rarely hear, “I see what you are doing. Thank you.”
Another may spend years caring for everyone else but rarely hear, “I appreciate you.”
People need more than the practical things a partner provides. There is also a need to feel that those efforts are seen and valued.
This does not mean appreciation should be used as a reward for good behaviour. It means that recognizing one another helps keep affection and connection alive.
What can be done?
Start noticing again.
Acknowledge the effort. Say thank you. Express affection. Tell your partner what is appreciated about them.
And be specific.
Instead of simply saying, “You’re a good husband,” try:
“I noticed how tired you were yesterday, but you still made sure the children were taken care of. I really appreciate that.”
Specific appreciation communicates something powerful:
“I see you.”
And being seen can make a tremendous difference in a relationship.
2. Avoiding the Conversations That Matter
This one goes deeper than simply having poor communication.
For many people, avoiding difficult conversations began long before adulthood.
Perhaps disagreement was treated as disrespect while growing up. Maybe expressing anger was discouraged, or difficult subjects were simply ignored because keeping the peace seemed more important than addressing the problem.
Over time, silence can become a familiar way of coping.
That same pattern can easily enter an intimate relationship.
Something may happen in the relationship that causes hurt, but instead of addressing it, the feeling is pushed aside.
A partner behaves in a way that repeatedly causes frustration, yet the issue is overlooked because raising it might lead to an argument.
Loneliness appears, but there is an assumption that it will eventually pass.
For a while, this can look like peace.
But silence is not always peace.
Sometimes it is simply unresolved hurt waiting for another place to come out.
Unspoken frustrations tend to accumulate. Irritation becomes resentment. Resentment can become withdrawal. Eventually, something relatively small triggers a reaction that seems much bigger than the situation itself.
The other person may wonder:
“Why are you reacting like this? It was just one thing.”
But it was never just that one thing.
It was the weight of many conversations that never happened.
What can be done?
Difficult conversations need to happen before frustration becomes resentment.
Instead of saying:
“You never listen to me.”
Try:
“When I am talking to you and you continue looking at your phone, I feel like what I am saying does not matter. I would really like us to be more present with each other when we talk.”
The difference is important.
One statement attacks the person. The other explains the experience and identifies what needs to change.
Healthy communication does not mean never disagreeing.
It means creating enough room for honesty, even when the truth is uncomfortable.
Two people do not have to agree on everything to have a healthy relationship.
But both should be able to express their feelings without being mocked, dismissed, or punished for speaking honestly.
3. Ignoring the Small Things Until They Become Big Things.
This is one of the most underestimated problems in relationships.
Couples sometimes say:
“We just grew apart.”
But when the story is examined more closely, the distance may have developed through years of small things that were never properly addressed.
Perhaps one person repeatedly uses their phone while the other is speaking. It gets mentioned once, dismissed, and eventually never raised again.
Maybe jokes are regularly made at the other’s expense. At first, there is laughter, even when something inside feels uncomfortable. Eventually, however, sharing becomes less frequent.
Perhaps ideas are constantly dismissed, promises are repeatedly broken, or concerns are brushed aside.
None of these moments may appear serious enough to threaten a relationship.
But repeated experiences leave an impression.
When someone repeatedly feels unheard, they may eventually stop speaking.
When their concerns are continually dismissed, they may stop bringing them up.
When vulnerability is met with criticism, they may stop opening up.
And slowly, emotional distance takes the place of connection.
This is why “small things” are not always small.
The issue is not necessarily the individual incident. It is what repeated incidents begin to communicate:
“My feelings do not matter here.”
“There is no point bringing this up.”
“I cannot really be myself in this relationship.”
Once those beliefs take hold, the relationship can become much harder to repair.
What can be done?
Address problems while there is still goodwill between both people.
Not every irritation requires a major confrontation. Sometimes an honest, calm conversation is enough:
“There is something small I have noticed, and I don’t want it to become a bigger issue between us. Can we talk about it?”
That kind of conversation creates an opportunity for understanding before resentment takes over.
Think of it like a small fire.
It is much easier to deal with a small flame than to wait until the entire house is burning.
Address the smoke before you have to fight the fire.
4. Disrespect That Hides Behind Familiarity.
“I am just joking.”
“Can’t you take a joke?”
“That is just how I talk.”
Being comfortable with someone should never become an excuse for treating them carelessly.
There is a difference between being able to laugh together and repeatedly making someone the object of humiliation.
Rolling the eyes whenever a partner speaks.
Mocking their opinions.
Calling them names during disagreements.
Embarrassing them in front of family or friends.
Belittling their achievements.
Speaking as though their thoughts are foolish or unimportant.
These behaviours may be dismissed as personality differences, but repeated disrespect changes the atmosphere of a relationship.
A person who is constantly mocked may eventually stop speaking.
Someone who is repeatedly criticized may stop sharing ideas.
A partner who is regularly embarrassed may begin protecting themselves emotionally rather than opening up.
And when someone starts feeling the need to protect themselves from the person they are supposed to feel closest to, something important has already been lost.
Relationship researcher John Gottman identified contempt: expressions of superiority, disgust, and disrespect,as particularly destructive to relationships. His research highlights an important truth: the way couples treat each other during difficult moments matters enormously.
You do not need to know relationship research to understand the basic principle.
Love and disrespect cannot comfortably grow in the same space.
A relationship cannot remain emotionally healthy when one person repeatedly makes the other feel small.
What can be done?
Pay attention to the way disagreements are handled.
Anyone can be kind when everything is going well. The real test comes during disappointment, frustration, and anger.
It is possible to disagree without humiliating.
It is possible to be angry without insulting.
It is possible to tell the truth without deliberately wounding the person receiving it.
If harshness has become normal in the relationship, it is worth asking:
“What is this way of speaking doing to us?”
That question can open the door to change.
The Truth Nobody Wants to Hear
These four patterns can appear in loving relationships.
They can appear in marriages that have lasted twenty years. They can appear between two people who genuinely love each other and fully intend to stay together.
That is what makes them so important to recognise.
Love alone does not automatically teach us how to love someone well.
A person can deeply love their partner and still develop habits that create distance.
Good intentions do not always prevent hurt.
Commitment does not automatically teach two people how to communicate, repair disagreements, appreciate one another, or create emotional safety.
The good news is that recognising a problem does not mean the relationship is doomed.
It means there is something that needs attention.
And the earlier that attention comes, the more opportunity there is to make a meaningful change.
So take a moment and ask yourself:
Is appreciation still present in our relationship?
Can difficult things be discussed without shutting down or attacking one another?
Are small problems being addressed, or are they quietly accumulating?
Do we still treat each other with respect when we disagree?
And perhaps the most important question:
If nothing changed about the way we relate to each other, would I be happy living like this five years from now?
There is no need to wait until a relationship falls apart before taking it seriously.
Sometimes healing begins with an apology.
Sometimes it begins with listening differently.
Sometimes it begins with finally saying what has been difficult to say.
And sometimes, it begins with admitting:
“We love each other, but we need help learning how to relate to each other differently.”
At Flourish & Thrive with EA, we support individuals and couples who are ready to understand their relationship patterns, work through emotional wounds, and build healthier, safer, and more fulfilling relationships.
If something in this article felt familiar, do not use it as a reason to blame yourself or your partner.
Use it as an invitation to pay attention.
Because awareness is not the end of healing.
It is where healing begins.
